Sicily is a region that gets its name from the Sicani, a village that was settled here centuries ago. Trinacria was another one of its denominations due to its trianglar shape. this island has always been an important presence on the continent due to its geo-strategic position. The known history of Sicily starts around 3000 b.c. when the island was inhabited by different ethnicities, the Sicels, the Sicani, and the Elymians. The first of these gave the name Sicily to the Island.
Later, in the 8th century b.c., Sicily was one of the Greek colonized territories. During this time, the Greeks founded important cities such as Siracusa, and the island was converted into all things Greek, as well as its lands and territories. They allied with the Spartans, of who were loyal allies, and only became Athens' enemy centuries later with the Peloponnese War, in which were involved the Carthaginians, who did great harm to the Grreks who, at the time, populated the Island of Sicily.
Later came the time of the Romans, during the first Punic War, the Roman Empire took control of the region except for the city of Siracusa, that lasted until the second Punic War. Sicily had converted into yet another Roman Province.
Sicily was a Roman Province until came the vandals, but this is the 5th century we are talking about here, a.d., and during this time, an important period of agitation began on the island. First the Romans were thrown off the island, later the Ostrogoths did the same with the Vandals in the 5th century, and later the Byzantines arrived and settled on the islands. The Muslims came too, during the 8th and 9th centuries.
After this long journey, came the time of the Norsemen, who came and conquered the island in the 11th century. It was the monuments of the Norsemen that expelled the Muslims, Byzantines, and all that were there on the island. In the 12th century, Southern Italy united with Sicily, and it was then known as the Kingdom of Two Sicilies.
During the 13th century, new tensions arose as the Kingdom of Two Sicilies divided because of the meddling of the Aragonese Throne, who was given control over the Island of Sicily, while the continent stayed under the control of the Kingdom of Naples.
During the 15th century, the Two Sicilies united once again after the conquest of the Kingdom of Naples by part of Alfonso V, the Magnificent King of Aragon.
Later came the unification of Italy and Sicily to become one in the same. Around the mide 20th century, the island became autonomous inside the Republic of Italy. In its provinces are Enna, Catania, or the Province of Caltanissetta, as well as Caltagirone, and Siracusa. the spoken language in Sicily is Italian, or also Sicilian, which is also a romance language that proceeds from Latin, and is often used in the region.
Today Sicily is a pretty tourist destination where you can enjoy your holidays in a beach house apartment or hotels in front of teh sea. Enjoy nature, fauna, climate, history, and more. Sicily is still writing its history, but for now, no pirates, romans, or Arabs have invaded it. Only tourists taking a nice holiday memories, and leaving with it their wealth to continue the islands' development. |
